Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sesser, Illinois. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialty is hair analysis, with testing centers present in cities Nationwide that can conduct these tests. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head, though body hair may be used alternatively. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG or other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly adopted in drug testing methods. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are now often favoring hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. These tests are utilized by entities with strict drug-free regulations, such as courts and those overseeing probation. The key advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection window for drugs, lasting up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and exceedingly hard to tamper with. Still, for identifying drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have become regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken from near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeline of up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and validation. For EtG, additional options, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable measure of body hair may be gathered. By "head hair," we mean only scalp hair. "Body hair" pertains to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps involved in lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a specimen into the lab’s framework. This includes confirming that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra data entry that is not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in court. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is initially positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the primary specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than in other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex method to implement.

Confirmation of any positive result during screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It's quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It shows a pattern of substance use over time, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Sesser, IL, hair follicle testing clearly outshines urine tests for drug detection. Hair tests offer longer detection windows and are more reliable, catching drug use that might be missed by urine tests. These tests are less vulnerable to tampering and provide a more comprehensive picture of substance use, making them an ideal choice for employers and legal bodies aiming to uphold zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers employers in Sesser, IL a prolonged detection window, capturing drug use over around 90 days. This extended period gives a thorough view of an individual’s drug history, essential for evaluating substance habits.
It ensures a detailed assessment, helping employers make better-informed hiring and retention decisions, distinctly superior to other testing methods with shorter detection spans.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
