Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Shobonier, Illinois. If you require a hair or alcohol drug test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing with centers nationwide to carry out a hair test. Individuals typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body in most scenarios. Hair analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer a hair test over the regular urine test. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals often use hair follicle drug tests. The main advantage lies in the test's extended drug use detection period, often up to 90 days, along with its monitored collection process, making it almost foolproof. However, for detecting very recent drug use, within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a prolonged history of substance usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for testing. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is recommended. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent body hair amount can be collected. In reference to head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab process for analyzing a drug test result includes four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial sample processing in a lab's system. This step involves verifying the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry that didn’t originate from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug presence. This stage is cost-efficient for excluding drugs in most samples, but a positive screen must be verified for legal acceptance. Samples showing a possible positive in Screening need additional confirmation.

For samples with initial positive results in Screening, extra hair from the specimen is utilized for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at a much lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), marking hair testing as the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive screens is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation as required. Each lab stage, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring more trustworthy results.
  • Tracks historical use: It provides a usage pattern over time rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Eye color and personal hair growth differences can impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests," these tests analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
