In South Chicago Heights, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing efficiently provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, their services extend nationwide with centers in all cities. For most cases, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. The hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Over recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become integral for effective drug testing. More employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine method. Ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial requirements, or probation, these tests offer the chief advantage of detecting drug use for up to 90 days, using a witnessed process that is virtually foolproof. However, urine testing remains adept for recent 5-day drug use detection.

What it is, How it works

The assessment of hair samples has emerged as a formidable method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair acts as a chronological record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered from near the scalp area, hair can offer a detection span of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, moderately challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch portion of close to 200 strands of hair (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be acquired, an equivalent volume of body hair can be taken. When addressing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab analysis of a drug test output include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s processing system. This step involves validating that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry that isn’t included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a preliminary examination for commonly abused drugs. Although Screening is an economical way to dismiss drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen demands confirmation to be valid in legal scenarios. Any samples presumed to be positive in Screening certainly require additional confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and made ready for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug analysis is one of the hardest approaches to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to three months, compared to urine tests which have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Challenges in falsifying results: It is significantly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the precision of the results.
  • Historical pattern indication: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over a duration, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: Drugs usually become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
