Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in South Jacksonville, Illinois. Whether you're in need of a drug or alcohol assessment via hair sample, our expertise lies in hair analysis. With test centers available in all cities nationwide, Accredited Drug Testing is well-equipped to conduct hair tests for detecting drugs and alcohol/ETG, among other customized options. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing.

In recent trends, there's been an uptick in utilizing hair follicle drug tests for substance screening. This method is increasingly favored by employers, judicial entities, and addiction specialists over urine tests. Hair follicle testing is indispensable for those adhering to zero-tolerance policies. Its primary advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, with the test being highly reliable and virtually tamper-proof. However, for identifying recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain unparalleled in precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can indicate substance use over a period of up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) situated nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, considered the best sample size for both screening and verification. For tests like EtG, additional panels, or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is preferred. Scaling the specimen using a jeweler’s balance is advisable. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" denotes only scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four central steps inherent in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not provided through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid check for illicit drug usage. Although Screening offers an economical solution to eliminate drug use in most cases, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to qualify for legal admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a sample may be positive, additional hair is extracted from the original batch for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lesser concentration than in alternate methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug testing is the most intricate method to perform.

Verification of a positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as per necessity. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can disclose drug consumption for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Altering results on a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Historical substance use data: It reveals a trail of substance usage over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
