In Springerton, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether it's for drug or alcohol detection, our focus is on hair testing, with centers available in every city coast-to-coast proficient in such testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Our hair tests encompass analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other specialized options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a favorable method for drug screening. Employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer it over conventional urine tests. It's the go-to for places insisting on strict drug prohibition. Hair testing is preferred due to its longer detection window, often capturing drug use extending to 90 days, alongside its resilient resistance to manipulation. Conversely, for more immediate detection (within 5 days), urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures indicators in its strands, offering a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over roughly a 3-month duration. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 strands (akin to the circumference of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four major phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into a lab’s database. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any required data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial drug abuse assessment. While economically efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be legally admissible. Samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening need a confirmatory test.

If Screening results indicate presumptive positivity, additional hair is extracted from the sample for the Extraction phase. Drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than in methods like urine or oral fluid analysis, marking hair drug screening as one of the most intricate processes.

Confirmation of a positive Screening outcome is executed through methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the laboratory procedure undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Merits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use up to 90 days back, whereas urine assessments have a shorter scope.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It chronicles drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments typically cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual hair growth differences can affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", these assessments examine the hair strand, not the underlying follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
