Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing in Stickney, Illinois. For those requiring drug or alcohol hair tests, our centers, located nationwide, are equipped to perform these analyses. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be utilized. Hair tests can analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle testing has become a more common method of drug screening. Employers, courts, and addiction specialists now favor hair tests over urine tests. This choice is prevalent among those with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probationers. Hair tests offer an extended detection window of 90 days, are collected under observation, and are nearly foolproof. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test remains precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is viewed as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, it offers about a 3-month detection period for substances. The collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing roughly 200 hair strands (approximate size of a #2 pencil) taken near the scalp gives 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both testing and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional assays, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other forms (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carries out any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs. While Screening is a cost-efficient way to exclude the presence of drugs in most samples, any positive result requires Confirmation for legal purposes. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening demand a secondary Confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive result, additional hair from the initial sample is processed for Extraction. In the Extraction stage, substances are pulled from hair in much lower concentrations than found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug testing as the most challenging to conduct.

Positive screening results are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed prior to Confirmation when necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring higher accuracy of results.
  • Historical analysis: It reveals a pattern of use over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other methods of testing.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can impact the concentration of metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strands instead of the follicles under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Stickney, IL, hair follicle testing outshines urine testing by offering superior detection and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which might detect recent use, hair tests track extended drug use patterns, often up to 90 days. This extensive window is invaluable for employers and officials aiming to identify long-term usage.

Moreover, the accuracy of hair tests mitigates the risk of tampering, common with urine samples. Employers benefit from a precise method that ensures adherence to zero-tolerance rules and enhances workplace safety.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Stickney, IL, provides an extended detection window, tracing substance use up to 90 days. This duration significantly surpasses that of urine tests, presenting a broader view of an individual’s drug habits, crucial for employers during hiring or routine checks.

By analyzing hair samples, employers can detect chronic usage patterns rather than momentary use. This comprehensive insight into an individual's substance history aids in making well-informed workforce decisions, ultimately contributing to a healthier organizational environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Stickney, IL, hair follicle tests boast a tamper-resistant method, diminishing the risk of sample adulteration. Unlike urine tests, which can easily be compromised, hair samples are inherently secure, guaranteeing reliable results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
