Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Stolle, Illinois. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this area with testing centers located in every city Nationwide capable of performing a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized hair testing options.

Over recent years, there has been an increase in using hair follicle drug tests for drug screening purposes. Employers, courts, and specialists in Substance Abuse are now more frequently preferring this over the standard urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are particularly sought by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as courts and individuals on probation. The key benefit of a hair follicle drug test is a longer detection window for drug use, typically up to 90 days, carried out under observed conditions, making it nearly impossible to tamper. However, urine tests remain most precise for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has gained recognition as a potent method for identifying substance and alcohol use. Hair serves as a long-term indicator of alcohol and drug consumption by encapsulating biomarkers within its growing strands. When taken near the scalp, hair samples offer roughly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drug use. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment composed of approximately 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be obtained. In the context of head hair, we refer to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of entering a sample into a lab's system. This process verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for illicit substances. While Screening provides a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening demand secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex method to administer.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples determined presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire testing process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation following ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to circumvent: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Captures historical usage patterns: It provides a usage pattern over time, not just recent substance use.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent usage: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug screenings typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the actual testing analyzes the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Stolle, IL, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing due to its superior detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests with limited timeframes, hair tests can track drug use patterns over months, providing clear insights into an individual's substance use timeline.

Hair follicle tests are esteemed for their reliability. While urine tests may suffice for recent use, hair testing reveals long-term patterns and minimizes the risk of false negatives, thus revealing a comprehensive picture of substance use.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Stolle, IL favor hair follicle tests for their extended detection window. Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days prior, these tests offer an extensive view into an applicant or employee's history, surpassing conventional methods that cover shorter periods.

This longer detection capability ensures employers get a detailed account of any potential substance issues, aiding in informed decision-making and personnel management.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle testing method implemented in Stolle, IL, offers a tamper-resistant approach to drug testing. Unlike other methods, hair samples are difficult to adulterate, ensuring the integrity of the results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
