In Stonefort, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, our centers are located nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices for such tests. Hair analyses can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other bespoke testing options.

The trend towards hair follicle drug testing has grown in recent times. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial bodies, and probation services benefit from its use. The advantage lies in its extended detection timeframe, up to 90 days, and its nearly tamper-proof collection process. However, urine tests remain the go-to for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the hair shaft. Upon collection near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair specimen containing around 200 strands (resembling the size of a #2 pencil) from nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair denotes all other types (beard, underarm, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The four key steps in a lab-based drug testing process include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system, which involves ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Though a cost-effective method for ruling out drug use in most cases, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally admissible. Samples testing positive under Screening require additional confirmation.

If a specimen screens positive, further hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drug separation from hair is achieved at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of positive screening results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo pre-confirmation washing as needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and accredited under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to circumvent: It is extraordinarily difficult to alter a hair drug test, leading to more accurate results.
  • Historic data: It can outline a timeline of drug use over time rather than just contemporary usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Stonefort, IL, outperforms traditional urine tests by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. One key advantage is its extended detection ability, identifying drug usage over several months. Unlike urine tests, which might miss recent abstinence, hair tests provide comprehensive drug history over 90 days, offering more insight into an individual's substance use patterns.

Extended Detection Window

In Stonefort, IL, hair follicle tests have an extended detection window, revealing drug use for up to 90 days. This long period gives employers a better understanding of an applicant’s or employee’s historical substance use. The ability to review a longer timeline enables more informed decisions concerning employment and drug-free workplace policies, safeguarding organizations from potential risks.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Stonefort, IL, significantly lowers the risk of sample tampering. Unlike other methods, hair samples are hard to adulterate, ensuring accurate and trustworthy results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
