Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Third Lake, IL. Specializing in hair analysis, we operate test centers across all major cities nationwide. For a hair test, individuals generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer various custom hair testing solutions.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has been on the rise, replacing traditional urine tests in some cases. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests, favoring their zero-tolerance policies. The main advantage of these tests is the prolonged detection period of up to 90 days, collected in an observed process, making cheating virtually impossible. Yet, for recent substance use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When a sample is gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising approximately 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests above 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair might be gathered. References to head hair denote scalp hair alone. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This encompasses verifying that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial swift check for drug abuse. Screening is a cost-effective strategy to rule out drug usage in most samples, though a positive screen must be affirmed to be admissible in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a far lower concentration than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a briefer detection window.
  • Hard to falsify: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Yields historical data: It can denote a pattern of drug use over a duration, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyses the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Consider Third Lake, IL, where hair follicle testing emerges as a superior option over urine tests. Unmatched detection precision positions hair testing as the go-to choice for identifying drug use. Unlike traditional urine samples, hair tests are far less prone to manipulation. This makes them more trustworthy, ensuring employers have accurate information about substance use.
Additionally, the extended timeframe fosters a more comprehensive look at usage patterns.

Extended Detection Window

Beyond its traditional uses, hair follicle testing in Third Lake, IL, offers an extended detection window, revealing drug use patterns up to 90 days prior. This extended period grants employers a valuable tool for reviewing an individual’s substance use history, making it easier to assess their reliability. The extended timeframe captures usage that shorter-term tests may miss, providing a fuller picture of behavior.
The long-term detection aids in creating well-informed employment decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Third Lake, IL, the hair follicle testing method provides an advantage with its tamper-resistant nature. Unlike urine tests, which can be altered or substituted, hair samples are incredibly difficult to contaminate or falsify. This confidence in the testing integrity ensures genuine results, critical for workplace safety and compliance. By reducing the possibility of cheating, employers can rely on the testing outcomes, fostering a trust-based environment.
It is practically foolproof.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
