Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Thomson, Illinois. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing spans across numerous Nationwide testing centers ready to conduct your test. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for testing. Hair tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to your needs.

In recent times, the trend in drug testing has shifted towards utilizing hair follicle drug tests. Many businesses, judicial entities, and substance abuse specialists now opt for hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are the preference of employers with strict no-drug policies and are also employed by courts for individuals on probation. A key advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended drug detection timeframe, usually up to 90 days, obtained through monitored collection, making tampering nearly impossible. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing stands as a robust method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair acts as a long-term record keeper for alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window for alcohol and drugs stretching up to around three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in a laboratory consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial procedure for processing a sample into a laboratory's system. This step involves confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to hold up in court. Presumptive positives from Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample tests as presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for further preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology.

Any positive result in the Screening phase is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, offering a longer window than urine tests, which have a shorter detection range.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides temporal data: It presents a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair samples.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
