Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Time, Illinois. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair analysis and provides testing centers across all cities nationwide for such tests. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body suffices. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing options.

Lately, the technique for drug screening increasingly includes the hair follicle method. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts favor hair testing over the typical urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are sought by employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation. The major advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window for drug use, usually reaching up to 90 days, collected under observed conditions, and nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine analysis remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a long-duration record of alcohol and other substances by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of developing hair. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, and so forth).

Process Summary

The processing of a drug test result in the lab involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse presence. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug use in most specimens, a positive screening must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Any specimens that indicate a possible positive in Screening require a secondary validation.

If a sample shows a potential positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. At this point, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug screening being the most complex method to execute.

Preceding any positive result is verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All potential positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug screening:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug analyses can identify substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine analyses have a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thus yielding more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Time, IL: Hair follicle testing showcases clear advantages over traditional urine analysis, primarily due to its enhanced detection abilities. It offers a broader window for identifying substance use, ensuring greater reliability and accuracy.
Employers benefit from the preferred test choice, observing a comprehensive view of an individual's history rather than limited snapshots offered by urine samples.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Time, IL: Hair follicle testing excels with its ability to trace substance use over months instead of days. This extended window of up to 90 days offers employers a detailed perspective on an applicant or employee's substance use patterns.
Such a prolonged detection ability assists companies looking to make informed hiring or retention decisions based on a thorough understanding of an individual's substance history.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
