In Tiskilwa, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in these tests, we provide services nationwide. A hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically required. Hair testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

Hair follicle testing is increasingly favored for drug evaluations, often replacing urine tests. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer this method due to its extended detection window and tamper-proof nature. While urine tests are still accurate for recent drug use, hair tests cover up to 90 days of usage.

What it is, How it works

Employing hair testing has gained a reputation as a robust method to uncover drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug usage by encasing biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When sourced close to the scalp, hair enables detection of alcohol and other drugs for a span of nearly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

By obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands of hair (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, one acquires 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be procured, equivalent body hair serves as an alternative. When mentioning head hair, we solely refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the inaugural processing of a sample within a laboratory's system. This process ensures the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening functions as an initial swift inspection for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to disqualify drug use in most samples, a positive identification necessitates confirmation for it to be court-admissible. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair at markedly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most arduous method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleaned as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage pattern: It can display a trajectory of drug use over time, rather than immediate use alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become noticeable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing practices.
  • Result inconsistencies: Hair color and individual growth rate can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the evaluation targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
