Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Toluca, Illinois. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our experts specialize in hair testing, with facilities in cities across the United States performing these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body in most scenarios. These tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, the trend in drug testing includes more frequent use of hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for this over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests help maintain zero-tolerance drug policies for employers, aid courts, and monitor individuals on probation. Their key advantage is a longer danger period detection, lasting up to 90 days, with observed collection processes minimizing chances of tampering. However, urine tests remain most precise for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the growing strand. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal a time frame of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to retrieve, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg, which is perfect for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Measure the sample with a jeweler's scale. If no scalp hair is available, an equal quantity of body hair might be used. Head hair pertains to scalp hair exclusively, while body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing includes four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where a sample is entered into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although it efficiently dismisses drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal validity. Any samples indicating presumptive positive during Screening require additional verification.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive at Screening, further hair is extracted from the original batch for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Positive screening confirmations are conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo washing before affirmation as needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocols and under the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike the shorter span of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair test is quite challenging, improving result reliability.
  • Tracks historical usage: This testing reflects a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It needs about 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair tests are pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
