Accredited Drug Testing offers full-spectrum hair follicle drug assessments in Towanda, Illinois. Whether you require drug or alcohol hair testing, we are experts in this field with locations in various cities countrywide equipped to conduct these analyses. Generally, hair from your head or body, at least 1.5 to 2 inches long, is necessary. These evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or support other custom hair testing needs.

In recent trends, hair follicle drug evaluations have gained popularity for substance detection. Several employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair tests over typical urine analyses. This approach is favored by strict anti-drug use employers, legal entities, and probationary programs. Its prime advantage is the extended detection period, spanning up to 90 days, coupled with supervised sample collection, making cheating almost impossible. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the gold standard for identifying drug intake within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Seen as an impressive technology, hair testing aids in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate biomarkers, offering a detailed history of substance usage. When sampled near the scalp, hair can show a detection timeframe of about three months for alcohol and various drugs. The collection is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch piece of around 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp results in 100mg, the preferred amount for screening and confirming. For EtG, additions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it's suggested to use 150mg. We advocate for weighing the hair using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not there, an identical portion of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This step involves checking the sample's seal and shipment accuracy, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial check-up for drugs of abuse. While a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen calls for confirmation to be considered valid in court. All samples found presumptively positive during Screening need a secondary validation.

Should a sample show a presumptively positive result in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and arranged for Extraction. Here, drugs are eluted from the hair at a notably lower concentration than other approaches (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening stands as the toughest method to execute.

Any positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire lab workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conformity with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments identify drug utilization for almost 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a smaller detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is considerably tough, ensuring more precise results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It provides a drug use pattern over a timeline, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It roughly takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically more costly than other methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the drug metabolite concentration present in the hair.

Note: While popularly termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
