In Tower Lake, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug analysis. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol drug test, we specialize in such services and have centers across all cities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required for the test. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as other tailor-made options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and professionals dealing with substance abuse prefer hair tests over the standard urine tests. This type of testing is utilized by employers upholding zero-tolerance drug policies, the courts, and probation officers. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window for drug use, typically up to 90 days, collected under strict observation, making it nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use within a five-day window, urine testing remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained recognition as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, comparatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the size of a #2 pencil), nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jewelry scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable volume of body hair may be sampled. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory's system. This entails confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift examination for substances of abuse. Although cost-efficient for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening mandate secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive screen is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thereby rendering more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: It furnishes a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself concentrates on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing testing methods in Tower Lake, IL, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests through enhanced detection accuracy. Hair testing provides a clearer picture of past substance use, offering unparalleled reliability. Accuracy is a hallmark of hair testing, minimizing errors often associated with urine testing methods.

Extended Detection Window

In Tower Lake, IL, hair follicle testing is praised for its broad detection window, spotting drug use over up to a 90-day period. This extensive scope offers a detailed overview of individuals' substance habits. Extended detection grants employers valuable insights into candidates' or employees' drug histories.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
