Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Tower Lakes, Illinois. Wherever you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are necessary. Hair tests can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, the approach to drug assessments has increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation individuals. Their main advantage is an extended detection span for drugs, usually up to 90 days, collected under supervision and hard to manipulate. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair strand. When sampling close to the scalp, it allows for a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively challenging to adulterate, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional panels, or procedures exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. Utilize a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. 'Head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair, while 'body hair' includes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test samples involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This phase includes checking that the sample remains sealed and correctly shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any necessary data entry overlooked by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs. While it is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive screen must be corroborated to be legally valid. Samples that are positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

For samples testing positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive screening findings. All preliminary positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. Every step of the lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, complies with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO/IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reflect drug use over a 90-day span, unlike urine tests with a shorter range.
  • Authenticity: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, rendering results more reliable.
  • Historical insight: Offers a record of drug use over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Delay in detecting recent use: Drugs appear in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair tests usually incur more expense than other drug detection methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Tower Lakes, IL, hair follicle testing stands out for its superior detection accuracy and reliability compared to traditional urine tests. Hair testing encompasses a broader detection window, capturing a substance use history of up to 90 days. It is also less susceptible to tampering. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
