Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Union, Illinois. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise is in this field with centers nationwide capable of performing these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or alternative body hair. Hair analyses can detect not only drugs and alcohol/ETG but also accommodate bespoke testing requirements.

Over recent times, employing hair follicle drug assessments has increasingly been adopted. Various entities like employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors prefer this over the traditional urine method. Hair tests are essential for those enforcing strict no-drug policies, for judiciary situations, and for individuals under supervision. Its key advantage lies in its extended detection timeline of up to 90 days, collected through direct observation and nearly foolproof reliability. Nonetheless, for most recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain highly precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When collected near the scalp, it can provide a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and various drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG assessments, additional requests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. In cases where scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair varieties (face, underarms, etc.).

Process Overview

Processing a drug test outcome in a lab involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s network. This includes ensuring the sample's seal and shipment integrity, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is economical for excluding drug use in the bulk of samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal acceptability. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before Confirmation as needed. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring higher result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a usage pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
