Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Union Hill, Illinois. For those requiring either a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we are specialists in such testing with facilities across all cities nationwide equipped to conduct these analyses. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary for testing. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and accommodate other bespoke requirements.

The use of hair follicle drug tests for screening purposes has gained prominence in recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are increasingly favoring this over the conventional urine test. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probation supervisors adopt this for its extended detection window, generally up to 90 days, secure observation during sample collection, and robustness against tampering. However, urine tests remain unmatched for detecting very recent (within 5 days) substance use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug intake by entrapping biomarkers in the fibers of hair as it grows. Hair collected near the scalp can furnish an approximate 3-month detection timeline for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, making it somewhat resistant to tampering and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair is suitable for collection. When discussing head hair, only scalp hair is implied. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process ensures the integrity of the sample’s seal and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any required data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary drug abuse check. While effective for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples with presumptive positives in the Screening stage necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing uniquely challenging to conduct.

Positive screenings undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary washing of presumptive positive samples is done prior to Confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation receives scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests detect drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Reduced likelihood of evasion: Cheating on a hair test is significantly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological data provision: Offers a historical pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: Detection of drugs in hair typically takes 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentration in hair samples.

Note: Although known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
