Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Valmeyer, Illinois. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty is hair testing, with facilities present in all cities across the U.S. for conducting hair tests. The hair required is typically 1.5 to 2 inches long, usually from the crown or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific analyses.

Over recent years, hair follicle testing has increasingly become a popular method for drug testing. It's preferred by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over the more typical urine tests. Companies with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationers utilize hair follicle tests due to the extensive drug use detection timeframe that covers up to 90 days. The collection is monitored, making it nearly cheat-proof. However, for detecting very recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Through its development, hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a prolonged record of alcohol and substances by embedding chemical markers in the strands of hair as they grow. Gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of about three months for various substances. Collection is straightforward, alteration is challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch fragment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's girth) nearest the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, which is optimal for evaluation and validation. For EtG inclusions or assessments exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to secure 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for accuracy in weighing is suggested. Should head hair not be accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can serve as an alternative. When mentioning head hair, it is specific to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages involved in the laboratory's handling of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the commencement phase, where a sample is integrated into the laboratory’s database. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipment are intact, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any supplemental data not captured by digital chain of custody mechanisms.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage in most samples, legal admissibility requires positive screens to be confirmed. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate additional confirmation steps.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample to undergo Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower levels compared to other techniques (like urine or saliva), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any suspected positive outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Each presumed positive sample is cleaned before confirmation, if necessary. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the laboratory protocol is subjected to scrutiny, aligned with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use reaching up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover shorter periods.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug evaluation is extremely difficult, thus enhancing the precision of results.
  • Offers historical insights: This method can reveal patterns of substance usage over a timeline, not merely recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs typically become noticeable in hair after a span of 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are generally costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually evaluates the strand of hair, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
