Accredited Drug Testing specializes in comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Venice, Illinois. When a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we offer expert hair testing nationwide, with locations in every city that can administer a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffice for most tests. Hair samples may be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more preferred method for drug testing. Numerous employers, legal courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals under probation. Their significant advantage is an extended detection window for drug usage, usually up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it nearly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most accurate method for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Regarded as an effective method, hair testing is excellent for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drugs because biomarkers are captured within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is obtained near the scalp, it offers an approximately 3-month detection window for substances like alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is quite challenging, and shipping is convenient.

An ideal sample, measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair for assessment. For tests including EtG, add-ons, or exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. Should scalp hair not be obtainable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes a drug test result through four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning details the sample’s primary integration into the lab’s system. This stage verifies the correct sealing and dispatch of the sample, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any supplementary data entry lacking from electronic chain of custody systems.

The Screening phase provides an initial assessment for drugs. Although Screening efficiently rules out drug use in most samples and is cost-effective, any positive results require confirmation for court acceptance. Samples that test presumptive positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

During the Screening phase, if a sample is deemed presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the existing specimen for Extraction. This stage involves drug extraction from hair, occurring at significantly lower concentrations than other methods like urine or oral fluids, hence making hair drug screening a challenging practice.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive Screening results. Samples requiring confirmation undergo a washing process if needed. The laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection window.
  • Low susceptibility to cheating: It’s highly challenging to cheat a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: Hair drug testing conveys a pattern of drug use across time, not merely reflecting recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: The detection of drugs in hair requires roughly 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Influences such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", this procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle situated under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The benefits of hair follicle testing over urine tests in Venice, IL, are considerable, emphasizing accuracy and dependability. Hair tests feature a longer detection window than urine tests, capturing up to 90 days of substance use as compared to the shorter period detectable by urine. Employers choose hair tests for their exactitude and difficulty of adulteration, ensuring policies are enforced authentically. The reliability of hair testing thus makes it a superior choice.

Extended Detection Window

In Venice, IL, the extended detection window offered by hair follicle tests means drug use can be traced over an extended period, up to 90 days, serving as a vast improvement over shorter-window tests. By providing a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history, employers gain invaluable insights into potential hires or current employees, safeguarding workplace integrity. An extended window equates to an enhanced perspective on drug use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Venice, IL, substantially mitigate the risk of tampering with rigorous procedural safeguards. By leveraging the inherent resistance of hair samples to adulteration, these tests provide an unquestionable level of reliability. The meticulous collection and handling processes further eliminate potential fraudulent practices, ensuring that every test result remains untarnished and credible.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
