In Vergennes, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers a full spectrum of hair follicle drug tests. If a hair-based drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise lies in hair testing, with available centers across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct the test. Typically, hair length between 1.5 and 2 inches is necessary, though body hair may sometimes suffice. These tests assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a standard method over recent years. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug testing over traditional urine testing. This type of testing is preferred by zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation officers. The key advantage is its extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, taken in a monitored setting, making it extremely hard to falsify. Despite this, urine tests still provide the most precise results for identifying drug usage within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is considered an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended historical account of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can show alcohol and drug presence for up to 90 days. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample containing approximately 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will weigh around 100mg, optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair pertain only to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other areas (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main stages of lab processing for drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into the lab's system. This step checks that the sample is adequately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a quick initial assessment for drugs. Screening is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use in most samples; however, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the sample for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair screening notably challenging.

Using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS, positive Screening results undergo Confirmation. Before Confirmation, presumptive positive samples are cleaned as required. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is validated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair tests can trace drug intake for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a reduced detection window.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are tough to evade, enhancing result reliability.
  • Yields historical insight: It can illustrate a drug use trend over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Fails to indicate recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair tests are pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Attributes such as hair color and growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair fiber, not the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
