Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Virginia, Illinois. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers across all U.S. cities to facilitate these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary. Our hair tests can identify the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer various personalized testing options.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has surged over the years. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor it over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers commonly adopt these tests. The standout feature of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days, making the process both verifiable and virtually foolproof. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine testing retains its accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term patterns of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered from the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprised of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advised to collect 150mg of the sample. A jeweler’s scale should be used to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be utilized. Reference to head hair should be understood as scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory drug test result analysis consists of four critical stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with incorporating the sample into the laboratory's framework. This step involves confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. This economical method can dismiss drug usage for most samples, but any positive screening results must be confirmed for acceptance in legal proceedings. Samples indicating presumptive positives during Screening require additional confirmation.

If the Screening stage yields a presumptive positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. During this phase, drugs are isolated from the hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate method to carry out.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are utilized to confirm positive Screening outcomes. All samples suggesting presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation, as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use within a 90-day frame, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is highly challenging to manipulate hair drug test outcomes, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It supplies a historical pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than alternative methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors including hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair shaft itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Virginia, IL, hair testing provides superior detection compared to traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests have a much longer detection period, making them more effective in identifying drug use history. They offer a higher degree of accuracy and are far less susceptible to tampering, ensuring reliable results.

Unlike urine tests, which may miss recent drug use beyond several days, hair testing highlights comprehensive substance use over months. This more extended detection reduces chances of overlooking past drug use, crucial for employers and legal professionals.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Virginia, IL, boasts a remarkably extensive detection window of up to 90 days. This allows employers to gain a detailed understanding of an individual's prior drug use. By examining a small hair sample, employers can assess a more comprehensive timeline of substance use history.

Unlike other methods, hair tests can detect drug use over these extended periods, providing pivotal information to employers. This insight helps in evaluating an employee's eligibility or potential risk, crucial for maintaining workplace standards.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Virginia, IL, hair follicle tests stand out as a tamper-resistant testing method. Unlike other testing techniques, the risk of sample adulteration is significantly minimized due to the nature of hair samples. This guarantees results that are trustworthy and nearly impossible to compromise.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
