Accredited Drug Testing offers efficient hair follicle drug testing services in Warren, Illinois. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol test you require, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available in cities across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp or body is necessary. Our analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific hair testing needs.

Lately, drug testing approaches have increasingly included hair follicle analysis. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now often prefer it to the conventional urine test. Hair follicle tests attract employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and people on probation due to its extended detection period, often reaching up to 90 days, ensuring accuracy through supervised sample collection, making it virtually tamper-proof. For detecting recent drug use, however, within the past 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers a detection window of up to about three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, alteration is somewhat challenging, and transportation is simple.

A section of hair measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of around 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For assessments including EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. The use of a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other forms (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in lab processing for a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial entry of a sample into the lab's system. It involves confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplemental data entry not submitted via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary quick assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to potentially dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screening outcome must be corroborated to be acceptable in court. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If the sample exhibits presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Drug extraction at this phase is done at lower concentrations from hair compared to other approaches (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed for confirming any positive screening outcome. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed prior to confirmation, if required. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Detecting drug use for up to 90 days is possible with hair tests, whereas urine tests have a shorter time frame of detection.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite difficult, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: Hair tests can reveal patterns of substance usage over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Typically, hair drug tests are pricier than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Differences like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Although frequently known as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing drug tests, hair follicle methods in Warren, IL, outperform urine tests in several ways. They offer better detection accuracy and a longer testing window.

  • Hair follicle tests detect drugs over a longer period, surpassing the brief window of urine tests.
  • They're also harder to cheat, making them a reliable choice for employers needing trusted results.

Extended Detection Window

The significant advantage of hair follicle testing in Warren, IL, is its extended detection window. By capturing drug use history up to 90 days, these tests offer a detailed profile of an individual's substance activities.

This comprehensive detection period suits employers looking to understand better an applicant or employee's long-term drug usage patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
