Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analysis in Washburn, Illinois. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, we focus on hair-based testing, with facilities in every city across the U.S. typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required. This method can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers other tailored testing services.

Lately, the implementation of drug tests is increasingly encompassing hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Addiction Treatment experts now favor hair testing over traditional urine assessments. It is particularly endorsed by organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and parolees' supervision due to its extended detection span, typically up to 90 days, observed collection procedures, and resilience against evasion, though urine tests remain most precise for recent drug use (within 5 days).

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When sampled near the scalp, it can reveal drug or alcohol presence for up to approximately a three-month duration. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond ten, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not covered by electronic chain of custody systems.

Screening is an initial expedited test for drug presence. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be validated for legal acceptability. Any samples presumptive positive in Screening mandate subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptive positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is corroborated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, compared to shorter detection times with urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity for detecting recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
