Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Wellington, Illinois. Should you require hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair analysis, and we cater to all cities across the nation, providing hair test services. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body suffices. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific requests.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common approach for detecting drugs. Employers, legal entities, and addiction experts often opt for this method rather than the traditional urine analysis. Companies with stringent drug-free policies, judicial systems, and probationary supervision favor hair testing due to its extended detection window—up to 90 days—which is highly challenging to falsify. Nevertheless, urine testing remains the standard for identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair strands serve as a long-term record of alcohol and drug exposure by encapsulating biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When hair is clipped near the scalp, it can reveal up to a 3-month analysis period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to acquire, relatively challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, approximately 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg, an optimal quantity for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to determine the specimen's weight with a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be insufficient, a similar quantity of body hair may be obtained. "Head hair" denotes only scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four fundamental stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's introduction into the lab's framework. This step involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any information not captured by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment of substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical means of excluding drug use for most samples, a positive finding must be verified to be legally valid. Samples that test positive at Screening require additional verification.

Should a sample yield a positive indication in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive Screening outcomes undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed prior to Confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny as per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter durations.
  • High integrity: Tampering with hair drug tests is exceedingly difficult, enhancing accuracy and reliability.
  • Historical insight: It offers patterns of substance use over time, rather than only recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent detection: Drugs typically become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to alternate testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests," the assessment evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Wellington, IL, hair follicle testing holds distinct advantages over urine testing. Hair analysis detects drug use over a longer duration, offering superior insights into a person's substance consumption. Unlike urine tests, which can be cheated or adulterated, hair tests provide reliable and accurate results, establishing them as a preferred choice for comprehensive drug screening.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
