In Wheeler, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers exhaustive hair follicle drug analysis. For those in need of hair-based assessments for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities in cities across the country to carry out these tests. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head's crown or body, suffices. Tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor-made variations.

Hair follicle testing has become a more common method for substance analysis in recent years. Numerous employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation protocols use these hair tests. The main advantage is the up-to-90-day detection window, collected through monitored means, which is hard to compromise. Yet, for detecting very recent drug use within the previous 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows, hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present a detection window extending roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment, consisting of around 200 strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will produce 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid test for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage for the majority of samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally admissible. All samples with a presumptively positive Screening result must undergo a follow-up Confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is reason for hair drug screening's high complexity.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are pre-washed before Confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, rendering the outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historical data: It supplies a pattern of drug use over an extended period, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite being frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Wheeler, IL, hair follicle testing stands out for its exceptional detection capabilities compared to urine tests. Hair tests provide a broad detection window, offering detailed insights into an individual's drug use history, whereas urine tests often capture more recent use, missing crucial long-term data. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
