The identification of drug and alcohol use through hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method. Process Overview
The laboratory process for drug test results comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. The confirmation of any positive results from Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that presumptively test positive undergo washing before confirmation, as required. The whole laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
