Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services within Wilmington, Illinois. Whether your requirement is for hair-based drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, operating testing sites in all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing needs.

There has been a notable shift towards hair follicle drug tests in recent years. This method is now more widely adopted by various organizations, such as employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists, as opposed to conventional urine testing. Employers implementing zero-tolerance policies, judicial bodies, and individuals on probation are also turning to hair follicle tests. The key advantage is the extended detection timeframe, which spans up to 90 days, alongside the difficult nature of tampering. However, for drug use within a recent 5-day window, urine tests remain the most reliable method.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has become recognized as an effective approach for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 90-day detection period for alcohol and substances. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional assessments, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core phases in the lab handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab system. It ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data recording not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary fast inspection for substances of abuse. Whereas Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be validated to hold up in legal proceedings. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further validation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are retrieved from hair at a significantly lower density than via other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex method to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing options.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the amount of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
