Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Windsor, IL. If required, our centers, located in numerous cities nationwide, are equipped to conduct hair drug or alcohol tests, focusing extensively on hair assessments. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair suffices. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific hair testing needs.

Of late, drug screenings have favored hair follicle tests over conventional methods. Many employers, legal bodies, and substance professionals now opt for hair testing instead of urine tests. This preference stems from the test's zero-tolerance appeal for drugs, ensuring rigorous policies for employers, officers, and those on probation. Unlike urine tests, hair evaluations provide up to 90-day detection periods, are observed during sample collection, and are hard to counterfeit, though urine tests prove more accurate for drug detection within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of substance use by locking biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal substance presence for up to about a 3-month timeframe. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A segment of 1.5 inches, roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional assessments, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It’s advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be taken. When head hair is mentioned, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair types (such as facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The process of lab testing for drugs encompasses four critical stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where the sample is incorporated into a lab’s system. This step checks that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any extra data entry not provided through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although it is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples identified during Screening need secondary verification.

If Screening indicates a presumed positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are pulled from hair at lower concentrations than other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the standard of ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is quite challenging to falsify a hair drug test, which enhances the accuracy of the results.
  • Tracks historical use: It can outline a pattern of drug use over time, unlike tests that indicate only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Windsor, IL, the hair follicle test surpasses traditional urine tests in reliability. With a broad detection window, it uncovers drug use habits accurately, giving employers a detailed profile of an individual's history, reinforcing its superiority over urine exams.

While urine tests detect recent use, hair assessments guide employers in enforcing zero-tolerance policies more effectively, given the extended detection capabilities and reliable results of hair analysis.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Windsor, IL, leverage hair follicle testing for its extensive detection window, identifying drug usage over 90 days. This feature furnishes a comprehensive insight into an applicant or employee's substance history, aiding in robust decision-making processes.

By employing hair tests, businesses can monitor long-term substance abuse patterns, ensuring an informed evaluation free of recent abstinence masking broader issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
