Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Wood Dale, Illinois. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, we specialize in hair testing, with facilities located in every city Nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head's crown or body. Hair tests evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has shifted towards the hair follicle method. This type of drug test is favored by many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals instead of the conventional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation programs prefer hair follicle tests due to their extended detection window of drug use, lasting up to 90 days. It involves an observed sample collection, making acts of deceit nearly impossible. However, when assessing recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing is gaining popularity as a significant method for identifying consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a lengthy record of substance use by embedding markers in the strands as the hair grows. When collected near the scalp, it can reveal up to a 90-day history of alcohol and other drug use. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the recommended amount for testing. For EtG, additional testing, and more extensive panels, it is suggested to obtain 150mg. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing. If scalp hair isn’t available, the same amount of body hair may be used instead. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. In contrast, the body hair category includes all other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Breakdown

The primary stages involved in a laboratory’s drug test result processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is incorporated into the lab’s system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry if not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes a preliminary fast check for drugs. Although Screening efficiently eliminates drug presence in the majority of samples, verification is necessary for any positive result to be valid in judicial settings. Presumptively positive samples found in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be marked as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this point, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or saliva), making it among the most challenging testing methodologies.

The final Confirmation on any positive results from screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation if required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of Hair Drug Testing:

  • Lengthy detection period: Hair drug tests offer up to a 90-day detection period, unlike urine tests which cover shorter periods.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It’s very challenging to manipulate hair drug tests, enhancing their accuracy.
  • Captures historical trends: It reveals substance use patterns over an extended period, not just immediate usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs compared to alternate testing methods.
  • Result variations: Influences such as hair color and individual differences in growth can sway the drug metabolite balance in the hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is commonly used, but the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle deeper within the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
