Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Akron, Indiana. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with testing facilities available in every city across the country equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or the body is necessary. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for different hair testing purposes.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity as a method for identifying drug use. Many businesses, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse experts now favor these tests over simple urine analyses. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by companies with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage is its extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected under direct observation, making it hard to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests still hold the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective tool for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 strands of hair (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advised. We recommend weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial sample processing into the laboratory's system. This involves ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not given by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial drug abuse check. While Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be court-admissible. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Difficulty to deceive: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides usage history: It can offer a trend of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the test itself analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine tests in Akron, IN, the benefits are clear. Enhanced Detection and Increased Reliability are two main advantages, offering a superior method of identifying drug use.

While a standard urine test can detect recent drug use, hair testing provides a much broader detection window and higher accuracy. This ensures that individuals who need thorough substance history checks receive reliable results.

Extended Detection Window

A significant feature of hair follicle testing in Akron is its Extended Detection Window. Unlike other testing methods, a hair test can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, providing a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history.

Employers can make informed decisions by leveraging the longer detection period of hair tests, ensuring that they evaluate applicants' or employees' long-term habits rather than recent activity alone.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
