Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Albion, Indiana. If a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is necessary, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we operate centers in cities across the nation capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. Hair screenings may include analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method in drug testing. This shift sees many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts favoring hair testing over traditional urine testing. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and those supervising individuals on probation often select these tests. Hair follicle tests primarily benefit from a detection period reaching up to 90 days, featuring secure collection practices and high resistance to tampering. Nevertheless, for recent drug use within five days, urine remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now viewed as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair maintains a long-term record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, it can offer about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hairs (like a #2 pencil) close to the scalp produces 100mg of hair, an ideal amount for preliminary and confirmatory tests. For tests like EtG add-ons or above 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair can't be used, a similar amount of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The main four steps in laboratory drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a lab's system. This step verifies that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes outstanding data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening phase involves an initial drug-of-abuse check. While it's a cost-effective method to dismiss drug use in most cases, a positive screen still requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening must have a secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates presumptive positivity, additional hair from the original sample is used for the Extraction phase, where drugs are isolated at lower concentrations than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening more challenging.

Any positives from Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike the shorter windows of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Due to the difficulty in cheating, hair tests yield more reliable results.
  • Shows historical patterns: Provides information on drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Non-detection of recent use: Drugs only become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
