Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair drug testing services in Amboy, Indiana. Whether you need a test for drugs or alcohol, we're experts in hair testing and have centers nationwide, including all cities, ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair can be used. Hair tests can check for various substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG, among other custom testing options.

Recently, the prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has increased. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by entities with zero-tolerance policies on drug use, such as employers, courts, and probation programs. The advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it much harder to tamper with. However, urine tests are still preferred for detecting drug use within the last 5 days due to their precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment is increasingly viewed as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a chronic history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to falsify, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, an optimal sample for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG extensions or analyses above 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferred. It is advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is insufficient, an equivalent volume of body hair can be acquired. By head hair, we mean scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory assessment for a drug test result generally involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails processing the sample initially into the lab's system. This includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and any further data input required beyond what is supplied by an electronic custody chain.

Screening involves an initial swift examination for substance abuse. While Screening is economically effective in negating drug use for the majority of samples, any positive indications require confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples marked as presumptively positive during Screening necessitate additional verification.

Should a specimen indicate positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, substances are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or saliva), rendering hair drug assessment the most challenging approach to execute.

Verification of any positive results from the screening is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Hair drug testing advantages:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Tampering with hair drug tests is very challenging, thus ensuring accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can exhibit a drug usage pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Constraints:

  • Unavailable for recent usage identification: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair pigment and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
