In Avon, Indiana, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're seeking a hair or alcohol test, we're experts in hair tests and offer services in cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required for testing. Our hair tests can screen for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Lately, drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Hair tests are mandated by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, favoring them over urine tests. Such tests are preferred for zero-tolerance drug policies, probation issues, and provide longer detection up to 90 days. Though nearly impossible to alter, urine tests are still best for very recent drug usage.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged report of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When clipped near the scalp, hair may reveal up to roughly a 3-month detectability span for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to obtain, moderately challenging to tamper with, and simple to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal specimen for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional checks, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent portion of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the foundational processing of a specimen into a lab’s framework. It includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening signifies an initial swift evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary validation.

If a specimen is flagged as presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criterion and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection window.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is exceedingly difficult to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can portray a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the examination itself analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
