Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Bainbridge, Indiana. Specializing in hair testing for drugs or alcohol, we have facilities nationwide to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests are customizable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

Recently, hair follicle testing has been favored for drug tests. Many employers, courts, and substance professionals now opt for hair tests over urine. Employer zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation use this method. Hair tests offer a 90-day drug use detection, are collected with close supervision, and are difficult to manipulate. However, a urine test remains the most accurate for drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a chronological record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growing strand's fibers. When collected from near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drug usage. Hair is easy to gather, has a low risk of tampering, and is convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch cutting of about 200 hairs (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for initial and confirmatory assessments. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler's scale for measuring the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it exclusively means scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test result in a laboratory setting include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into a lab's system. This step includes checking that the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial swift evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening economically determines the absence of drug use in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening undergo further processing in Extraction, which involves extracting drugs from the hair, typically at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring hair drug testing's complexity.

Positive screening findings are validated via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive lab protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use over the past 90 days, compared to the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Challenge in manipulation: It's very challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring greater accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Patterns of drug usage: It provides insights into habitual drug use over time, not merely recent drug consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
