Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance testing services in Bargersville, Indiana. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, our centers nationwide are equipped for hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and even offer tailored testing solutions.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has increased among employers, legal authorities, and substance misuse experts. This method is favored over traditional urine tests, particularly by organizations with strict no-drug policies. The standout advantage is its extensive detection window, reaching up to 90 days, with an observed collection method that is nearly tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain effective for detecting recent drug intake within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered from near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hairs (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG cases, extra add-ons, or screens beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is preferred. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair should be collected. "Head hair" strictly denotes scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test result process comprises four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary incorporation of a specimen into a lab's system. This entails confirming proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not automated by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drug misuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to discard drug use in most samples, a positive outcome must receive confirmation for court acceptability. Any samples testing preliminarily positive require additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Processing in the Extraction phase. Drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging procedure.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, which is longer than the window for urine tests.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is immensely difficult, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Chronological data provision: It offers insight into drug use patterns over an extended period, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drug presence in hair becomes identifiable only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations within hair strands.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
