In Batesville, Indiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is accessible at numerous centers across the Nation. Generally, a hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is required for analysis. Clients can opt for hair testing catered to drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored requirements.

Over recent years, hair follicle testing has become increasingly common for drug detection. Employers, legal institutions, and professionals in substance abuse now favor this over urinalysis. Such tests are ideal for organizations with strict drug policies, the legal system, and probationary monitoring. Hair testing's chief advantage is its prolonged detection capability, covering up to 90 days, ensuring accuracy through supervised collection and minimizing fraud. Nonetheless, urinalysis remains the best method for use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a prolonged record of drug and alcohol use. When obtained near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to about three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to adulterate, and convenient to ship.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps involved in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing where a sample is logged into a laboratory's system. This procedure includes verifying that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data that isn't provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial quick assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective way to rule out drug use in most samples, any positive screen must undergo confirmation to be admissible in court. Samples exhibiting presumptive positive results in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample returns a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in alternative methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents the greatest challenge.

Confirmation of any positively screened result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples returning presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation, if required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to evade: Cheating a hair drug test proves to be exceptionally challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: This method can reveal a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Despite being colloquially termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
