Accredited Drug Testing provides complete hair follicle testing services in Blanford, Indiana. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, our specialism in hair testing, coupled with testing centers nationwide, ensures that a hair test can be easily accessed in any city. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required for testing, and in many instances, body hair can also be used. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

Recent trends in drug testing techniques have seen a notable increase in the use of hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by companies with strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and individuals on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection period of up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process that makes them nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for substance use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture a historical record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. When hair is clipped near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil thickness) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and those beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is needed. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen weight. If scalp hair can't be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When stating head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of incorporating a sample into a laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any remaining data input not gathered by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening performs an initial rapid check for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples showing a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening more challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any screen that indicates positivity is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples flagged as presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation consistent with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, versus urine tests which have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Reveals historical usage: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Blanford, IN Hair testing surpasses traditional urine tests in several ways. Firstly, hair follicle tests provide a longer detection window, making them key for identifying drug use over extended periods. Additionally, hair tests offer superior accuracy and are resistant to tampering, ensuring dependable results. This reliability makes them preferable for employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse professionals alike.

Unlike urine tests, which primarily detect recent drug use, hair tests provide a broader window of detection. This comprehensive insight into substance history is invaluable, allowing stakeholders to make informed decisions based on reliable data. The rigorous testing protocols further ensure the authenticity and integrity of hair follicle drug tests.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Blanford, IN Hair follicle testing shines with its extended detection period, offering up to 90 days of traceability. This expansive timeframe allows employers to gain a thorough understanding of an individual's drug use history. Unlike tests with shorter detection spans, hair analysis provides a holistic view, enhancing decision-making with more comprehensive data.

The extended detection window is particularly beneficial for those enforcing strict compliance with substance use policies. Employers and authorities can be confident that they have a full picture of an individual's history, which is crucial in maintaining safety and adherence to policies within a variety of environments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Blanford, IN Hair follicle testing provides a formidable defense against sample adulteration. The very nature of hair testing minimizes the risk of tampering, ensuring results are both reliable and unquestionable. This resistance to manipulation is crucial, offering peace of mind to stakeholders relying on the integrity of drug testing results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
