Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Boston, Indiana. For those necessitating a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is well-established, with facilities located in all cities nationwide equipped to conduct a hair test. Generally, hair from the crown of the head or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is sufficient. Hair samples may be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle tests have gained prominence as a preferred drug testing method. An increasing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This is particularly favored by employers endorsing strict drug use policies, legal entities, and individuals under probation. The chief advantage of hair testing is its extended detection span, often reaching up to 90 days, with the sample collection being observed and challenging to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain unbeatable in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. The technique provides a comprehensive timeline of substance intake by capturing biomarkers within the hair strands. Collected close to the scalp, it offers a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The process is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the preferred quantity for assessment and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or panels exceeding ten, 150mg is advised. It's best to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent measure of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's system, confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening efficiently eliminates drug use for most samples, a positive result must be validated for legal admissibility. Samples that are potentially positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is potentially positive during Screening, more hair is collected from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. This stage involves drug retrieval from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of positive screening results is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair requirements and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is particularly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: Provides a trend of drug use over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Inconsistent outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth rates may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
