Process Overview
The lab processing for a drug test consists of these four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning involves integrating the sample into the lab’s system, ensuring it was sealed and transported properly, assigning a unique Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and entering any additional data not captured electronically.
Screening performs an initial, quick check for drug presence. While it is a cost-efficient method for clearing most samples, a positive test here requires further confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples with a presumptively positive result must undergo secondary verification.
For samples that test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at a far lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid) which is why hair-based screening is more challenging to execute.
Confirmation of any positive screenings is done with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technology. Any presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes review in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
