In Bryant, Indiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing. Whether you're required to take a hair drug or alcohol test, you can count on our nationwide facilities, specializing in hair analysis, to provide the testing you need. Typically, the use of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is necessary. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate tailored testing requirements.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular method for screening. Many businesses, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair follicle tests over traditional urine screenings. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation trust hair testing for its extended detection window, which can capture drug use up to 90 days. Despite its advantages, urine tests remain the best choice for detecting recent drug use, within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. A sample sourced near the scalp can offer an approx. 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to harvest, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other kinds of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s workflow. This step verifies that the sample was adequately sealed and delivered, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly means to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples yielding positive indications in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample indicates a positive result in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other approaches (ex. urine or oral fluid), which underscores why hair drug testing is the most challenging approach to apply.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that appear positive initially undergo washing as needed before confirmation. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screens can reveal drug usage for a duration of up to 90 days, in contrast to urine screens which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug screen is notably tough, yielding more accurate results.
  • Supplies historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug consumption habits, as opposed to just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot discover very recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only about 5-7 days after consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug screening techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is a misnomer since the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
