What it is, How it works

The integration of hair testing is recognized as an effective method for unveiling alcohol and drug consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged record of substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers a detection span extending up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair's collection is straightforward, it's somewhat resistant to tampering, and it transports easily.

A specimen of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hairs (similar to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be substituted. Reference to head hair specifically denotes scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory sequence for processing a drug test result consists of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a specimen into a laboratory’s database. This comprises ensuring the sample's proper sealing and transport, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any outstanding data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary, swift assessment for abused substances. Screening provides an economical approach to exclude drug consumption in most cases, yet a positive screenshot necessitates validation to be legally acceptable. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair from the initial sample is extracted and readied for Extraction. Here, substances are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair testing demands high proficiency.

Confirmation of any positive indication during screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptively positive sample is cleansed before confirmation if required. The entirety of the lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing identifies drug use over a span of up to 90 days, as opposed to urine assessments with shorter detection periods.
  • Unlikely to be falsified: Manipulating hair drug tests is challenging, increasing result accuracy.
  • Historical consumption insights: It outlines drug usage patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Non-detection of recent intake: Drugs become visible in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair testing often incurs higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair coloration and individual growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Burlington, IN
The advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests are substantial. With greater detection accuracy and reliability, hair tests provide a clearer picture of an individual's substance use history, making them a preferred method for comprehensive evaluations.

While urine tests serve their purpose, hair follicle tests offer a longer detection window and are less prone to tampering, ensuring more accurate results for individuals and organizations alike.

Extended Detection Window
