Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Carlisle, Indiana. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, and we have facilities for testing in every city Nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body hair can be used. Hair examinations are customizable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly utilized hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists opt for hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their longer drug use detection window, up to 90 days, collected through observed procedures, and offering resistance to cheating. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for identifying drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective resource for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair records a lasting history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing strand. If sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. It’s easy to collect hair, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A section measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amounting to 150mg is advisable. Use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be taken. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system, affirming the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial check for substances of abuse. While an effective method to dismiss substance use for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples deemed presumptively positive through Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Once a sample registers presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methodologies (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screen occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus providing more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: Represents a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent substance use: Requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to show in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can alter drug metabolites' concentration in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers a major advantage over traditional urine testing in Carlisle, IN. Its superior detection accuracy allows for identifying substances long after consumption, providing reliable evidence of drug use history. Contrarily, urine tests often miss substances consumed beyond their limited detection window.

Employers in Carlisle benefit from the reliability of hair testing, which can accurately reflect an employee's substance use behavior over time. While urine tests can be manipulated easily, hair follicle tests offer a secure alternative, presenting an honest and thorough account of an individual's substance history.

Extended Detection Window

In Carlisle, IN, hair follicle testing stands out for its extended detection window, capturing substance use up to 90 days. This comprehensive detection period gives employers a clearer understanding of an individual's long-term drug history, surpassing the limited scope offered by urine tests.

An extended detection window is particularly useful for employers seeking to enforce drug-free policies. By revealing past drug use over a longer period, hair follicle tests provide assurance of consistent compliance with these policies, fostering a safer workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Carlisle, IN significantly diminish the risk of tampering, delivering consistent and indisputable results. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are less susceptible to modification, making them a reliable choice for substance detection.

The rigorous process surrounding hair follicle tests prevents sample adulteration. Observed collections ensure authenticity, establishing a trustworthy testing method that leaves little room for manipulation by the test subjects.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
