Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Cayuga, Indiana. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, our centers, spread across various cities nationwide, specialize in this method, ensuring thorough analysis. Typically, hair lengths of 1.5 to 2 inches are necessary, sourced either from the scalp or, in some instances, the body. These tests are pivotal in identifying drugs, alcohol/ETG, and specially requested examinations.

In the past few years, there has been a notable shift toward the incorporation of hair follicle drug assessments in testing protocols. An increasing number of employers, judicial bodies, and Experts in Substance Abuse demand hair testing over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle assessments are preferred by employers adhering to strict drug-free mandates, legal systems, and individuals under probation. The key advantage lies in the lengthy detection span of up to 90 days, utilizing a supervised collection approach—which is exceedingly difficult to compromise. Nevertheless, for determining recent drug consumption within a 5-day frame, urine assessments remain superior in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust mechanism for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window for alcohol and drugs extending up to about 3 months. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for initial tests and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It is recommended to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. The term "head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the entry of a sample into the lab's system. This step includes verifying the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for eliminating drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be acceptable in a legal setting. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is remarkably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over a duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
