Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle screening services in Cedar Grove, Indiana. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise in hair analysis is unmatched, with facilities across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is ideal for these assessments. We offer tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained traction as a preferred method for drug detection. Various employers, judicial entities, and substance monitoring experts now favor it over traditional urine tests. Its primary strength lies in its extended drug use detection window, reaching up to 90 days, with samples taken under supervision and resistant to tampering. Nonetheless, for recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding indicators within the fiber of the hair shaft as it grows. When collected adjacent to the scalp, this method can offer a detection period of up to about 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair samples are easy to obtain, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

Taking a 1.5-inch hair sample of around 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG tests, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, it is suggested to use 150mg of the sample. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be used, a similar quantity of body hair is a suitable alternative. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s records. This step confirms that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require secondary verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are removed from the hair at a significantly reduced concentration than in other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive findings from the Screening is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that show presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Provides historical usage pattern: It can show drug use trends over time, not simply recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being often called "hair follicle tests", the examination itself focuses on analyzing the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
