Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments throughout Central, Indiana. For those requiring testing for substances or alcohol, our expertise in hair sample analysis is unmatched, with facilities in every major city across the nation ready to perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are necessary for testing, which identifies drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

In recent developments, the preference for hair follicle drug testing has escalated. This testing method is increasingly mandated by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists over standard urine screenings. Hair follicle tests cater to organizations with strict anti-drug policies, legal bodies, and individuals on probation, primarily due to their extensive detection period extending up to 90 days. The testing is conducted under supervision and offers minimal risk of tampering. However, for accurately identifying recent substance use in the past five days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair encases biomarkers within the fibers as it grows, providing a prolonged record of substance intake. A sample taken near the scalp can reveal up to a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the beginning process involving the integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process entails ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning an unidentifiable LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any missing data entry needed beyond what is provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a rapid preliminary examination for detecting drug abuse, offering a cost-efficient method to rule out usage in most samples. A positive screening result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Presumptive positives detected in Screening demand further verification through secondary Confirmation.

For samples showing positive indication during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample, and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, hair is subjected to deep analysis, where the concentration of drugs is usually lower compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo a wash if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory procedure is thoroughly reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair code and in adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days past, whereas urine tests have shorter timeframes.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks past usage: Provides a historical insight into drug consumption over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Undetectable recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Pricier: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other types of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though occasionally termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
