Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Coal City, Indiana. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is specialized in hair testing with centers scattered across all cities Nationwide. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or body typically suffices. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other hair test options.

Recently, the inclusion of hair follicle drug tests has become more common in drug testing protocols. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests serve those with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The main advantage is a longer detection period for up to 90 days, with observed collection, making cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain most accurate for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of drug use by capturing biomarkers within the growing fiber strands. When gathered close to the scalp, the hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month window for detecting substance use. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of around 200 hair strands, each 1.5 inches (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels above 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. 'Head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair, while 'body hair' denotes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results includes four major phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates with entering a sample into the lab’s system. This process checks that the sample has been sealed and delivered correctly, allocates a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and complements any missing data not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a swift preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While it is economical for dismissing drug use across most samples, a positive must be confirmed for court acceptance. Thus, samples testing presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptively positive result in the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair screening the most challenging to perform.

Positive confirmations from the screening are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed ahead of confirmation if necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have shorter windows.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair tests are tough to evade, offering more reliable results.
  • Reveals usage history: They can demonstrate a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often pricier compared to other methods.
  • Variance in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Even though commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand and excludes the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Coal City, IN: Hair tests offer greater accuracy and a longer detection span than urine tests. This makes them more dependable for finding long-term drug use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
