In Crane, Indiana, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis. For clients requiring hair-based drug or alcohol screenings, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers nationwide poised to conduct these advanced tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are necessary from either the crown or body for accurate testing of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored analyses.

Recently, the preference for hair follicle drug testing has grown among employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts, overtaking traditional urine tests. This method suits employers with strict anti-drug policies, judiciary mandates, and probations due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and difficulty to manipulate. Urine tests, however, remain optimal for identifying recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. The hair fiber retains biomarkers, offering a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding them within the growing strand. When extracted near the scalp, hair can show a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it implies scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all additional hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome includes four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initially entering a sample into a lab’s system. It encompasses confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any more data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening presents an initial fast verification for drugs of abuse. Though Screening serves as a cost-efficient strategy to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, it requires confirmation for court admissibility if positive. Any samples that yield presumptive positives in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If the sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much reduced concentration compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result operates via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptively positive are washed as necessary before confirmation. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can discover drug usage for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a briefer detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, making results more reliable.
  • Offers historical data: Capable of showing a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It necessitates approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can modify the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Crane, IN, hair follicle testing stands out for its enhanced detection accuracy over traditional urine tests. Unlike urine screenings that only reflect recent usage, hair tests provide a broader detection window of up to 90 days. Employers favor this for its thoroughness, ensuring that potential hires are evaluated with precision and reliability.

Moreover, hair testing is less susceptible to evasion attempts, a common issue with urine tests. With a meticulously observed collection process and minimal chances of tampering, hair follicle tests yield consistent and credible results, making them a top choice for maintaining workplace integrity.

Extended Detection Window

One of the significant advantages of hair follicle testing in Crane, IN, is its extended detection window. Unlike other methods, hair analysis can assess drug usage over a period as long as 90 days, offering employers comprehensive insights into an individual’s substance history. This long-term perspective aids in making informed decisions about potential hires or current employees.

The ability to detect substances over such an extended period is instrumental in creating a complete profile of an applicant or employee, going beyond temporary abstinence that shorter-window tests might miss. It is an invaluable tool for assessing the true drug abstinence of individuals.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Crane, IN, the integrity of hair follicle testing is unparalleled. Unlike other testing methods prone to tampering, the hair test’s structure significantly reduces the possibility of sample manipulation. This assurance is vital for both employees and employers, ensuring results that are both reliable and trustworthy.

Hair tests are nearly impossible to adulterate, thanks to their unique collection and testing process. This security ensures that the results reflect true substance use, free from external interference, providing peace of mind and fairness in evaluations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
