Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Crothersville, Indiana. When in need of hair drug or alcohol assessments, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair testing expertise, with facilities nationwide equipped to conduct hair exams. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair testing provides analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair test types.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly featured hair follicle drug tests. More businesses, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judiciary systems, and probation officers use hair follicle drug tests. The key advantage of hair testing lies in its extended detection window—up to 90 days—collected under supervision, making tampering almost impossible. However, for new drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When collected from near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate three-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advocate weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process for laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input absent in a digital chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a preliminary rapid check for substance abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage for the bulk of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in a legal setting. All samples that are provisionally positive during Screening require a subsequent verification.

If a sample tests provisionally positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than seen in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every provisionally positive sample is cleansed prior to verification if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to deceive: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over a timeline, as opposed to merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal discrepancies in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
