In Darlington, Indiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether for drug or alcohol testing, our centers, located nationwide, are ready to assist. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required, offering options in drug, alcohol/ETG, or specialized hair analyses.

Hair follicle testing has become increasingly popular in recent years, with employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals opting for it over urinalysis. With a much longer detection period of up to 90 days and challenging to cheat due to the observed collection process, hair tests are preferred by entities with strict no-drug policies, though urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term histories of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within its growing strands. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length with about 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes any other types of hair (such as facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing phase where a sample is integrated into a lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was sealed and mailed correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry if an electronic chain of custody system wasn't used.

Screening entails a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug use in most instances, a positive indication needs verification for legal validity. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening need a further confirmation test.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at lower concentrations than with other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screenings the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screen is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples get washed before confirmation if needed. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed both under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection span.
  • Cheating deterrence: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to cheating, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: They showcase a pattern of drug consumption over an extended period, not only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair is influenced by factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers clear advantages over more traditional urine tests in Darlington, IN. Unlike urine tests, hair tests have a longer detection window, often identifying drug use up to 90 days back, providing a more comprehensive overview of substance use.

Extended Detection Window

One of the notable advantages of hair follicle testing in Darlington, IN, is its extended detection window. This method can trace evidence of drug use for up to 90 days, a stark contrast to the limited timeframe of urine tests, which only capture recent consumption.

Employers benefit from this comprehensive view of an employee's substance history, crucial for maintaining a drug-free workplace environment. This extensive period proves invaluable for making informed decisions regarding personnel management and safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
